Newsletters and Alternative Trade Routes | How New Ideas Happen | Today’s Most Important Skill
Hi All!
Greetings from Jakarta!
As you guys know, I am currently enrolled in an online course called Building a Second Brain course. For those of you who does not know, Building a Second Brain is a course taught by Tiago Forte, the founder of Forte Labs, which teach us how to manage digital informations and use it for creative purposes.
For a brief introduction of what is Building a Second Brain or who is Tiago Forte and his methodology, you can check my article about How Tiago Forte Changed How I See Productivity. It is a brief summary of what I learned from Tiago Forte, before enrolling into his class. His methodology changed how I see productivity and the overall field of personal knowledge management.
You can learn more about him and his writings in his website (some of them are paywalled, but all of the free materials are also good!) or you can also check the course summary in the twitter thread I made. I will be updating during my time in the course, so don’t forget to follow me on Twitter!
Okay, enough rambling about me idolizing Tiago Forte, let's enter into the weekly digest!
Things I find Interesting this Week
[#Article] Newsletters and Alternative Trade Routes by Julian Lehr
We are currently seeing the emergence of newsletter. With the help of Substack and Revue, writers are writing newsletter to build their audience. But, why is newsletter becoming more popular now?
The short answer is, distribution. Newsletter is one of many channels to distribute your writings directly to the reader. When blogs are becoming more crowded, being able to reach people directly into their inbox is one of the alternative route.
Also, people like newsletter format better because it feels more personal. Receiving a personalized letter from your favorite writers where they update you with what they think, see, and learn directly into your inbox.
A great article to read that explains on why newsletter is a viable option to build your audience.
[#Article] How New Ideas Happen by Dan Shipper
Who thinks that great ideas are born from a new, unexplored, way of thinking? I know I have. I always thought I have to come up with this new, mind blowing, perspective changing, paradigm shifting way of thinking to come up with a fresh and original ideas. Turns out, there are no new ideas in this world, there are only a new way of seeing the existing ideas.
Chuck Palahniuk says this clearly:
"Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known.”
— Chuck Palahniuk
New ideas are just a collection of old ideas, organized in a structured form, distilled from the fluff, and expressed in a different perspective.
[#Article] Today’s Most Important Skill by Sergey Faldin
How many times things do not go according to plan? We have managed our time accordingly, but still fell out of the crack. Most of the time, the reason is we are not managing our attention well.
Sergey Faldin says attention is today's most important skills. Why is that? As distractions are everywhere, the ability to keep your attention on one thing is important. This is the reason why attention management is a crucial skill in this era.
The best way to keep your attention is set the environment, be aware of your intention, and remove all distractions.
